The first author and her team spotted a wood owl at Nyalazi Campground in the early afternoon while camped close to a wetland. The wood owl is Chamaesaura anguina, a species that breeds in the Kalahari. The owl, which is fairly common in the area, is quite a striking sight. The bird is easily recognizable due to its rufous, chestnut-colored plumage.
This striking bird is endemic to Swaziland and south Africa. It is listed as 'Near Threatened' in Swaziland and is 'Near Threatened' in South Africa.
