Nyalazi Campsite Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park

Located just 4km outside the Central Gate of Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, the Nyalazi Campsite is owned by Nunu Jobe and is an excellent base to explore this ancient park. Hluhluwe Imfolozi park is the oldest proclaimed park in Africa. Visiting the park through Nyalazi Gate will give you excellent views of the park and a better understanding of conservation and preservation. This camp site embodies this idea.

Wood owl

The first author and her team spotted a wood owl at Nyalazi Campground in the early afternoon while camped close to a wetland. The wood owl is Chamaesaura anguina, a species that breeds in the Kalahari. The owl, which is fairly common in the area, is quite a striking sight. The bird is easily recognizable due to its rufous, chestnut-colored plumage.

This striking bird is endemic to Swaziland and south Africa. It is listed as 'Near Threatened' in Swaziland and is 'Near Threatened' in South Africa. The numbers of this bird at Nyalazi Campsite indicate that the population is not threatened by human disturbance. Observations made in July 1997 found that there were seven individuals of Chamaesaura area at one site.
