Hilltop Camp — Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve
Self-Catering Safari Chalets In Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal
The oldest safari camp in KwaZulu-Natal, perched 450 metres above Big 5 territory
Hilltop Camp
Hluhluwe's Historic Safari Base Since 1934, Where Operation Rhino Saved the White Rhinoceros From Extinction
Perched at 450 meters elevation on the highest ridge in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Hilltop Camp commands views extending 30 kilometers north across forested hills to the Ubombo Mountains.
The camp's elevated position: established in 1934: sits above the tree line where summer thermals bring black eagles and martial eagles circling past the restaurant deck at eye level.
Below the thatched chalets and stone pathways, kudu bulls browse at the security fence while vervet monkey troops stage calculated raids on unattended braai areas. Be warned. they are masters, The elephants come to the uMfolozi River blow the camp to drink in evenings, Magical.
Hilltop-this fully fenced camp delivers self-catering comfort with a restaurant, pool, and daily game drives operating straight from the property. Kudu, white rhino, elephant, and lion territory begins at the perimeter fence — no transfer required.
The camp's conservation credentials run deep. It was here, in the early 1960s, that conservationist Dr Ian Player and his team used Hilltop's infrastructure as the operational headquarters for the Natal Parks Board's Operation Rhino — a landmark translocation program that pulled the southern white rhinoceros back from the edge of extinction.
Today, 1,600-plus white rhinos roam the reserve that surrounds the camp, and the black rhinoceros — critically endangered and present here at one of the highest densities in South Africa — browses the dense thicket below the ridge each morning. Guests at Hilltop Camp wake to that history every single day.
With 70 accommodation units spread across thatched chalets and traditional rondavels, Hilltop Camp suits solo travellers, couples, families, and small groups seeking flexible Big 5 safari accommodation in KwaZulu-Natal.
The camp is fully fenced for security, units are serviced daily, and linen and bath towels are provided across all unit types. On-site facilities include a swimming pool, playground, fuel station, curio shop, and Mpunyane Restaurant — open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking the forested valley.

Practical planning
Accommodation at Hilltop Camp — Chalets, Rondavels & Mtwazi Lodge
Hilltop Camp 70 units are distributed across four accommodation types, catering for two-person couples, families of four, and exclusive-use groups. All units are constructed in brick under traditional thatch and step down the hillside through indigenous bush, serviced daily by camp staff.
Bed linen and bath towels are supplied across every unit type, and all units are equipped with fans and mosquito nets — the camp is situated at 450 metres elevation, which significantly reduces malaria exposure compared to the lowveld, though standard precautions are still advised.
4-Bed Self-Catering Chalets (22 Units)
The 4-bed self-catering chalets are the flagship accommodation at Hilltop Camp and the most in-demand units in the park, particularly during school holidays.
Each chalet comprises two separate bedrooms, each with two single beds, opening onto a shared open-plan lounge and dining area that leads directly to a private outdoor deck with a braai stand.
The en-suite bathroom serves both bedrooms and includes a bath-and-shower combination.
The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, microwave oven, full-size fridge, kettle, and a complete set of basic crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils.
The deck commands views across the forested hillside; kudu bulls browse the vegetation below at dusk, and the bird activity at the treetop level is constant throughout the day.
Maximum occupancy is four adults.
2-Bed Self-Catering Chalets (7 Units)
The 2-bed self-catering chalets follow the same high-quality finish as the 4-bed units, with one bedroom containing two single beds, an en-suite bathroom with bath-and-shower combination,
a fully equipped kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and kettle, a lounge with a sleeper couch that can accommodate one child up to the age of 12, and a private outdoor deck with braai stand.
A TV with DSTV satellite connection is included. Units are serviced daily. Maximum occupancy is two adults, plus one child on the sleeper couch.
2-Bed Non-Self-Catering Chalets (20 Units)
These thatched brick chalets are designed for guests who prefer to take their meals in Mpunyane Restaurant rather than self-cater. Each unit features one bedroom with two single beds, an en-suite bathroom with bath-and-shower combination, a lounge/sitting area,
and a bar refrigerator and kettle with basic crockery for tea and coffee preparation. There are no cooking facilities and no braai stand in non-self-catering units.
All meals are taken at the restaurant, for which the camp's restaurant pricing applies. Linen and bath towels are provided, and units are serviced daily. Maximum occupancy is two adults.
2-Bed Rondavels (20 Units)
The rondavels are Hilltop Camp's most affordable option and carry the most traditional safari-camp character — round thatched structures with communal ablution and kitchen facilities shared between units.
Each rondavel contains two single beds; guests share bathroom and kitchen facilities with neighbouring rondavel guests.
This configuration suits adventurous solo travellers and couples on tighter budgets who want the experience of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi without compromising on the game-reserve setting.
Mtwazi Exclusive-Use Lodge (8 Guests)

Hilltop Camp Hluhluwe game reserve — frequently asked questions
What is Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe game reserve?
Hilltop Camp is the main safari accommodation camp in the northern Hluhluwe sector of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Established in 1934, it is the oldest tourist resort in KwaZulu-Natal and the only camp in the entire 96,000-hectare park with an on-site restaurant. It offers 70 accommodation units including thatched self-catering and non-self-catering chalets, rondavels, and an exclusive-use bush lodge, all managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
Where exactly is Hilltop Camp?
Hilltop Camp is located in the northern Hluhluwe sector of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The camp sits at 450 metres elevation on the highest ridge in the reserve, approximately 280 kilometres north of Durban via the N2 highway. It is reached via Nyalazi Gate (about 45 minutes from the gate to camp) or Memorial Gate (about 20 minutes from the gate).
How much does it cost to stay at Hilltop Camp?
Hilltop Camp accommodation rates start from approximately R1,472 per night for a 2-bed rondavel (2 people sharing), R3,164 per night for a 2-bed self-catering or non-self-catering chalet (max 2 adults), and R6,328 per night for a 4-bed self-catering chalet (max 4 adults). Rates are per unit per night and exclude the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park daily conservation fee of R240 per adult for international visitors (R120 for South Africans). Rates increase during peak season and school holidays.
Is Hilltop Camp self-catering?
Hilltop Camp offers both self-catering and non-self-catering accommodation options. The 4-bed chalets (22 units) and most 2-bed chalets (7 units) are fully equipped self-catering units with stove, microwave, fridge, kettle, crockery, and cutlery, plus a private braai stand. The 20 x 2-bed non-self-catering chalets have a bar fridge and kettle only — guests in these units dine at Mpunyane Restaurant on-site. The 20 rondavels share communal kitchen facilities.
Does Hilltop Camp have a restaurant?
Yes. Hilltop Camp is the only accommodation camp in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve with an on-site restaurant. Mpunyane Restaurant serves a full English breakfast buffet daily and offers lunch and dinner service. There is also a full-service bar and pub with a lounge decorated with historical photographs and park memorabilia. At weekends, the restaurant hosts a braai buffet on the veranda overlooking the valley.
Is Hilltop Camp fenced?
Yes. Hilltop Camp is the only fenced accommodation camp in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve. The fencing allows guests to walk safely between their chalets, the restaurant, the bar, and the swimming pool after dark without needing a vehicle. All other camps and lodges in the park — including Mpila Camp and the eight-bed bush lodges — are unfenced.
What Big 5 animals can I see at Hilltop Camp and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi?
All five members of the Big 5 — white and black rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo — are resident in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve. White rhino sightings along the main roads of the northern Hluhluwe section are near-guaranteed during dry season (May–September), and the reserve holds both the historical birthplace of white rhino conservation (Operation Rhino, 1960s) and one of the highest densities of black rhino in South Africa. Lion prides are sighted three to four times weekly in thin dry-season vegetation. Elephant concentrate at waterholes from June through October.
What is the best time of year to visit Hilltop Camp Hluhluwe game reserve?
The best time to visit Hilltop Camp is during the dry season from May through September, with June, July, and August representing peak conditions: mild temperatures of 10–25°C, thin vegetation that opens sightlines across the reserve, animals predictably concentrated at waterholes, and near-zero malaria risk at Hilltop's 450-metre elevation. July and August correspond with South African school holidays and book out earliest — reserve as far in advance as possible. April and September offer excellent conditions with fewer visitors.
Is Hilltop Camp Hluhluwe game reserve worth visiting?
Yes — Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve is consistently regarded as one of the best-value Big 5 safari experiences in southern Africa. At R3,164–R6,328 per unit per night (per night, not per person), it provides genuine Big 5 access including white rhino — the reserve's signature and most reliable sighting — together with full on-site facilities, self-catering capacity, and the historical depth of the continent's oldest game reserve. The elevation, views, and 90-year camp history add layers of experience that many newer, higher-priced lodges cannot replicate.
Is Hilltop Camp suitable for families with children?
Yes. Hilltop Camp is well-suited for families. The camp is fully fenced, making it safe for children to move between units, the swimming pool, and the playground. Children under three years old stay free in certain unit types, and a cot can be arranged at reception at no charge. The 4-bed self-catering chalets with two separate bedrooms are ideal for families. Note that guided game drives do not accept children under the age of six; self-drive game viewing is available from any age.
Are there double beds at Hilltop Camp?
No. All accommodation units at Hilltop Camp — chalets and rondavels — are fitted with single beds only. There are no double or queen beds available at Hilltop Camp. Couples who require a double bed should confirm current unit configuration directly with the operator before booking, as this is a fixed characteristic of the camp's accommodation.
How do I get to Hilltop Camp from Durban?
From Durban, Hilltop Camp is approximately a three-hour drive via the N2 highway northbound. The most common route is to take the N2 north to either Nyalazi Gate (exit at Hluhluwe town, roughly 280 kilometres from Durban) or Memorial Gate (for travellers approaching from Pongola or the north). From Nyalazi Gate the drive through the reserve to Hilltop Camp is approximately 45 minutes; from Memorial Gate, approximately 20 minutes. Standard two-wheel-drive vehicles are suitable for all main park roads. Plan your fuel stop before entering the park, though fuel is available at Hilltop Camp itself.
What should I bring to Hilltop Camp?
Guests staying in self-catering units should purchase groceries, drinking water, and charcoal or firelighters before entering the park — the on-site shop carries only basic foodstuffs and firewood. Clothing essentials include warm layers for early-morning game drives in winter (June–August temperatures drop to 10°C), a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen for summer, and comfortable walking shoes. Binoculars, a camera with a telephoto lens, insect repellent, and a personal torch or headlamp for moving between units at night are strongly recommended. A first-aid kit and personal medications are advised, as the nearest hospitals are outside the park.
Can you do self-drive game viewing in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi from Hilltop Camp?
Yes. Self-drive game viewing is available to all guests across the entire main road network of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve using any standard two-wheel-drive vehicle. Self-drive maps of the park are available at entrance gates. The gate times (open 05h00–06h00 depending on season; close 18h00–19h00) define your window each day. The northern Hluhluwe section road network — directly accessible from Hilltop Camp — is the richest terrain in the park for white rhino, elephant, and lion.
What are the check-in and check-out times at Hilltop Camp?
Check-in and check-out times at Hilltop Camp are [TO CONFIRM directly with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife or the current camp operator]. Note that all guests must be inside the game reserve before the park gates close for the day — 18h00 in the winter months (April–September) and 19h00 in summer (October–March). Plan your travel accordingly to arrive before gate-closing time.

What guests say about Hilltop Camp
The following reviews are sample placeholders only — replace each one with a real verified guest review from Google, TripAdvisor, or direct guest submissions before publishing.
"We spent four nights in one of the 4-bed self-catering chalets with our two teenagers, and the experience exceeded every expectation. White rhino sightings literally from the camp road on our first evening drive, and a full morning lion sighting on day three. The deck view from our chalet at sunrise is something we will not forget. Hilltop Camp is exactly what a real African bush camp should be."
"As a wildlife photographer, I have travelled across seven African countries, and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi with Hilltop as a base ranks alongside the very best. The dry-season vegetation in July was perfect for clear sightlines, the Hlaza Hide delivered elephant and black rhino in the same session, and the elevation of the camp means you are above the coastal humidity. The restaurant makes a good base for evenings when you are too tired to cook after a full game drive day."
"My husband and I came for a long weekend in June for our anniversary. No mobile signal, no work, pure bush. The guides on the morning game drive were knowledgeable and patient — we found a leopard in a fig tree at first light. The non-self-catering chalet was clean, comfortable, and perfectly set up for two people who just want to experience the game reserve without the logistics of self-catering. Highly recommended for couples."
